Quick Overview

"ALLEZ, ALLEZ!!" said les Gardiens before they set out across the salt flats, and grassy wetlands area of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, the white horses of the Camargue, live semi-wild in this wet environment. They are not "wild horses” but  have lived in the Camargues wetlands for thousands of years.

These beautiful white horses are owned by the Camargue's traditional cowboys, (AKA les Gardiens) for herding and rounding up the area's distinctive black bulls, and also used for pony trekking.

Allez, Allez

From a trip to the coast of Southern France, the collection celebrates the majestic white horses of the Camargue. St Marie de la Mares has wonderfully un-spoilt wetlands, and is an exceptional haven for wildlife and the Camargue horse.

This series features images of these beautiful white Camargue horses splashing through the shallow waters of the marsh region. The horses were led by the Guardiens -- (France's Camargue cowboys) through the marshes. The Camargue horses lives almost free within the "manades" -- farms where the horses are bred. The photographs illustrate the gentle, relaxed nature and powerful grace of the Camargue horses that have lived in the area for centuries.

"My images have a painterly feel, almost dream-like, and, that, to me, feel timeless. My ultimate goal is to create images that give the viewer the sensation of being there and experiencing first-hand the majestic quality, grace, and beauty of that moment.“I love photographing horses at liberty. There is something about watching the movement of the horse through the viewfinder, something about the horse without restraint: the power, the grace, the beauty of the majestic horse."
